Aboard the Icebreaker
Seabed 2030
For a documentary film crew, few assignments are as rewarding. We were invited to get on board Oden, the legendary Swedish icebreaker, as it left Svalbard and headed deep into the Arctic Ocean.
The mission was to test a new mapping system while also exploring an area of the seabed that had never been mapped before.
Oden and its crew have played a unique part in filling out the gaps in the GEBCO grid – the open source map of the world’s oceans. After years of working together with Seabed 2030 and telling the story of intrepid expeditions, we were delighted to join one ourselves.
Huge thanks to the captain and crew of the Oden, as well as the mapping team, led by the great Professor Martin Jakobsson who welcomed our cameras and patiently explained what they do.
Take ten minutes out of your day to see this mini-doc and watch Oden cut through the ice while mapping the frozen depths – incredible science with incredible images.
